IS ASIAN GLOW GOOD OR BAD?
It is common for drinkers to experience the alcohol flush reaction, or the so-called "Asian glow". But now experts are saying that the condition may be a sign of a health problem. When the body lacks a certain type of enzyme to metabolize the alcohol, one may experience blotches or flushes. People who get red when drinking are advised to take the matter more seriously, because they may be more prone to head and neck cancers.
Mr. Lin, a forty-year-old construction worker, recently paid a visit to the doctor, complaining about not being able to swallow when he drinks alcohol.
The doctor discovered that Mr. Lin enjoys consuming alcohol and is proud that he turns red whenever he imbibes any.
Lin erroneously believed that a red face was an indication of a good liver.
As a matter of fact, this symptom is an indication that Mr. Lin's body is unable to handle the alcoholic substance.
After undergoing an endoscopy, Mr. Lin was found to have developed cancerous growths in his esophagus and pharynx.
Medical experts say that the reason Mr. Lin turned red was because his body lacks the enzymes to process ethanol.
Twenty percent of Taiwan citizens lack this kind of enzyme and easily turn red with alcohol.
These people will exhibit difficulty or pain in swallowing or develop incurable oral ulcers.
These people are encouraged to undergo an endoscopy to catch any early symptoms.
