HEALTH GURU? OR SIMPLY A QUACK?
As far as alternative therapies go, this may be the most violent and painful. A health guru from China, Hsiao Hong-tze, is in Taiwan this week to promote his unique brand of therapy, which features successive smacks on various parts of the body and often results in bruises.
But his claims of the method's miraculous effects have now attracted the attention of the Department of Health over potential legal violations.
Hsiao once stated, among an assortment of incredible healing stories, that a diabetic patient was cured through body smacking in the span of seven days.
But the health authorities find his account suspicious, and Hsiao's lack of official medical credentials also prevents him from advertising the effects of his treatment here in Taiwan.
An investigation has already been started into his alleged medical practices on the island, and he may face penalties, including expulsion, if found violating the law.
