UNSUNG HEROES BEHIND THE STARS
Speaking of martial arts, have you ever wondered how the big-screen action stars would measure up against someone like Fan in a real fight? Of course, we won't have the definitive answer unless they actually square off in the ring, but our next story might give you a clue about the possible result.
If you're a fan of the Asian Kung-fu cinema, you're probably familiar with this fight scene.
It's Wong Fei-hung, the legendary martial artist played by Jet Li, versus the leader of the White Lotus cult in "Once Upon a Time in China 2."
The villain here is played by Xiong Xin-xin, Li's longtime stunt double. But few moviegoers would realize that Xiong is, in a sense, fighting himself on screen, for he was still doubling for Li, who sustained an injury at the time, in several shots of the sequence.
While a lot of men would love to have a face like Andy Lau's, physical resemblance to the Hong Kong megastar is at best a mixed blessing for Lau's personal stunt double, Du Yi-heng.
A talented actor and singer in his own right, Du admits it's hard to be himself in the show business once he's been labeled as an Andy-Lau-lookalike.
The King of Action, Jackie Chan, has a reputation for doing his own death-defying stunts in a stellar career that spans five decades, but it turns out that he still needs to resort to doubles sometimes. The man in the photo, Li Hai-qing, not only bears a striking resemblance to Chan, but is just as skillful in martial arts.
The most notable difference between the two is in the size of their paychecks.
While Chan regularly receives salaries north of 10 million US dollars per film, Li only makes about 5000 RMB per month.
So the next time when you see a breath-taking fight scene on screen, spare a thought for these faceless heroes, who toil through sweat and pain to make the stars shine.
