The history of martial arts may have been dominated by male fighters, but the contributions of some extraordinary women should never be ignored. In a new action film from Hong Kong, the director seeks to honor two female legends in 18th-century China, who are said to have founded the famous fighting style "Wing Chun."

Since the resounding success of the 2008 Kung-fu flick "Ip Man," the Wing Chun fighting style has become the hottest topic in the martial arts genre.

After a series of movies focusing on the life of grandmaster Ip, an upcoming film, which stars veteran action actress Kara Hui and newcomer Bai Jing, seeks to explain the origin of Wing Chun to the audience.

Bai plays the legendary Qing dynasty martial artist Yim Wing-chun, after whom the fighting style is allegedly named. And Hui is cast in the role of Buddhist nun Wu Mei, Yim's instructor.

It's been 18 years since Hui last starred in an action film, but she shows no sign of rust in the breath-taking fighting sequences here.

And Bai, who majored in dance back in college, is totally convincing as a young Kung-fu master without the help of a stunt double. She said the most challenging part of her role is to express the spirit of martial arts.

"You have to display the spirit and power of Kung-fu. And that takes practice."

The film is scheduled to open in Taiwan this weekend.
