Return of a Classic
A classic stage play based on the work of renowned novelist Pai Hsien-yung is making a comeback after thrilling theatergoers in Taipei 28 years ago. Featuring a brand new cast, the upcoming production aims to introduce Pai's timeless masterpiece to a younger generation of audiences.
An adaptation from established writer Pai Hsien-yung's famous literary work "Wandering in the Garden, Waking from a Dream", the stage play was a huge success when it made the debut at Sun Yat-sen memorial hall 28 years ago.
The leading role of Mrs. Chien was played by Lu Yen and is now being played by Peking opera veteran Wei Hai-ming in this new rendition.
The play sets in the background of the residence of Mrs. Dou, who move to Taiwan along with her husband, who's a general.
Dou's best friend Mrs. Chien is the leading role in the play, who reminisces the past and the complicated relations.
Mrs. Dou's character was played by seasoned actress Gui Ya-lei 28 years ago and is now played by Hsu Gui-ying.
Producer Hsu Po-yun said it took Pai 28 years to give the new play a green light.
While the set of cast members has been replaced, only the director Huang Yi-gong remains in the new production.
The show is expected to return to the Sun Yat-sen memorial Hall next year when the country celebrates its 100th anniversary.
