UNDERSTANDING THE SACRED JOURNEY
The annual worship of Dajia Matsu and Baishatun Matsu has just ended, but what people don't know is the difference between the traditions of the two grand pilgrimages. Now let's follow CTS, as we take you on a sacred journey.
The annual pilgrimage of Matsu is not just a religious trip, but also a physical challenge.
The most popular Matsu pilgrimages, Baishatun and Dajia, have different ways of practice.
It can be seen from the size and the material of the sedans.
The Dajia Matsu pilgrimage was a solemn event but gradually expanded into a large, regional activity.
The route remains the same from the end of Ching Dynasty with an estimated 280 kilometers in distance.
It takes about 8 to 9 days to complete the pilgrimage.
Worshippers can calculate the time and decide when and where to join the tour.
Although the Baishatun Matsu pilgrimage is also an eight-day event, the route is decided upon the divine opinion.
Since the route is not fixed, faithfuls need to follow the sedan the whole time or they might miss it.
While the two Matsus have their own local features and cultures, March is still the month for Matsu worshippers to show their strong faith in the God.
