CHEN CHAO-MIN MADE HALF-HEARTED ATTEMPT TO APOLOGIZE
Under overwhelming public pressure, former Defense Minister Chen Chao-min paid a visit to the mother of the wrongfully executed air force soldier Chiang Kuo-ching for the first time on Wednesday afternoon to offer an apology.
But he turned away and left before he even reached the front door of Chiang's residence, leaving many to question his sincerity.
Chen served as the chief commander of the Air Force Command 15 years ago when Chiang was accused as the murderer of a five-year-old girl. He was then convicted and executed in 1997.
But it was later discovered that Chiang was not the perpetrator, and his confession was obtained through torture.
However, as the 10-year statute of limitations has already expired, the prosecutors now cannot bring any charge against the military officials who have been responsible for Chiang's death.
And Chiang's mother has told the media that she will never forgive Chen for taking his son's life.
