IS IT SAFE TO EAT SEAFOOD?
Following the radiation traces found in the sea near the Fukushima plant, the public is becoming more concerned over the safety of seafood. Many consumers are starting to inquire about the origin of the fish, in fear that it may be tainted by radiation. To address the public's concern, the Taipei Fishery Marketing Corporation is providing certification to prove that the products are inspected, and that they are safe to consume.
Fish vendors try to put consumers' concerns to rest.
Most of their fish were bred along Taiwan's coastline, and consumers carefully examine the fish to make sure they didn't originate from Japan.
In the wake of Japan's nuclear crisis, shoppers are gravely concerned about radiation contamination.
According to the Taipei Fishery Marketing Corporation, average daily sales amounted to around 100 tons or 10 million NT before the crisis, and have not fallen dramatically since the earthquake and tsunami.
It has also begun selling fish certified by academic institutions.
The Fisheries Agency says that Taiwan's fishing boats are staying out of Fukushima's waters, and that the Kuroshio's impact on Taiwan's catch is limited because it flows in a northeasterly direction.
At the same time, the agency will continue inspecting fishing harbors for radiation.
