NEW MEASURE TO HELP SAVE THE PLANET
The Environmental Protection Administration is now requiring convenience and beverage stores to charge less for people who provide their own containers.
In an attempt to save our planet, the new measure is set to reduce about 450 million disposable cups annually, while 110 thousand trees will be able to escape the fate of being chopped down.
Consumers who bring in their own cups when buying drinks at the convenience stores or beverage stores will enjoy a discount, or be able to participate in the activity in collecting points to get a drink for free.
Those who buy a 100-NT-dollar drink may enjoy a 10-NT-dollar discount.
According to the Environmental Protection Administration, before the new regulation, 72 chains, around 160,000 stores have already started giving discounts to encourage consumers to bring their own cups, with a discount up to around 10 NT dollars per drink.
However, most consumers aren't used to bring in their own cups.
To help reduce the use of disposable cups to protect the environment, starting May 1st, the EPA has demanded all beverage stores to set up the recycle bins and signs to encourage consumers to recycle their disposable cups, while stores selling beverages need to provide incentives to consumers to encourage them to bring in their own cups.
Those who refuse to give incentives will face a 60,000- to 300,000-NT-dollar fine.
According to the EPA, the new measure is likely to reduce one third of the country's use of disposable cups, which is around 450 million cups, and save 110,000 trees per year.
EPA also encourages consumers to bring in their own cups when buying beverages, to help protect our environment.
