BLACK-FACED SPOONBILL CONSERVATION
The atypically low number of black-faced spoonbills visiting Taiwan this year has concerned many people. And the main reason may be the reduction of food supply for these birds caused by environmental changes. And several proposals have already been made by local authorities as well as conservation groups to address the problem.
On the last day of the long holiday, the conservation area of black-faced spoonbills is packed with visitors.

According to the result of a census, the number of black-faced spoonbills in the world is 1,848, down by 499 from last year.
The number of those found in Taiwan was 1,280 of last year and dropped to only 742 in the end of March.
This phenomenon has caused huge public concern.
Experts believe this may have a lot to do with the changes of neighboring fish farms and the fish species.
To address the problem, Taijiang National Park is to collaborate with Tainan University in planning a fish agriculture pond of 10-hectares.
If the rare birds stop coming to Taiwan in this autumn and fall, this could impact Taiwan's image in conservation effort and the eco-tourism industry.
