AN EASIER ROUTE FOR MEDICAL STUDENTS?
Following the top choice of being a dermatologist, the field of dentistry is also becoming a popular option for many medical students.
Professors are saying that they are worried about this growing trend among the younger generation, saying that people are getting into the industry because the dentistry program is shorter, and the pressure is lower compared to other medical professions.
Other than dental problems, more and more people would spend big money in order make their teeth as white as a pearl, even though the national health insurance doesn't reimburse these dental improvement services.
Therefore, many freshmen-to-be said that dentistry will be their first choice when applying for schools, because being a dentist may make more money.
Recently, National Taiwan University's Department of Dentistry has seen a fierce competition among 14 applicants vying for 3 open spots.
All of the applicants achieved full score in the college entrance exam.
Some professors in medical schools said that the dentistry program is a year less than the program in schools of medicine, while dentistry students can start their own clinics earlier.
In most of the times, dentistry graduates don't have to take internship in the ER, and they face less medical disputes comparing with graduates from other medical specialties.
This has also become a plus for students in choosing their departments.
However, professors also indicated that due to the economic downturn, many dentists have less income than before.
And in order to help attract more students to work as medical doctors, they hope that the government can provide more health insurance reimbursement on other medical specialties.
