According to the Department of Health, Taiwan is facing a shortage of gynecologists, which can greatly affect medical quality for women.

Legislators say that while many are expected to retire soon, less and less individuals are going into this specific field. In addition to little access for people living outside of the city, the government is set to conduct a review over the issue and the allocation of the resources, in an attempt to amend the problem.

Patients at gynecology clinics often complain about lengthy wait times, and a legislator recently said that the average age of gynecologists in Taiwan is rising while the gap between metropolitan and rural resources is widening.

Furthermore, the number of gynecologists is falling. According to Department of Health statistics, the number of licensed gynecologists in Taiwan rose by 5.06% over the last four years, compared to 15.25% for internal medicine and 22% for cosmetic surgery.

The Taiwan Association of Obstetrics and Gynecology says that the trend can be attributed to Taiwan's low birth rate and reduced national health insurance coverage.

At the same time, experts say that medical students tend to select specialties with higher rates of return.

According to Health Minister Chiu Wen-ta, the DOH will issue a report on the allocation of gynecology resources and national health insurance adjustments in two weeks.
