TOO TOXIC TO DRINK?
From the latest inspection by the Department of Health, some of the dry chrysanthemum tea products from Jiayi City are found to contain high level of pesticide, which can pose great danger to human health. Experts say that excessive amount of this toxic chemical can lead to serious illnesses, including deformity in babies and can even cause cancer.
The beautiful, golden chrysanthemum farm is where dried chrysanthemum flowers are from.
After being harvested, the flowers are dried and become wonderful drink with hot water.
The Jiayi city-based Wangji Chinese medicine trade company says it is unaware that the products it carries are toxic.
The products sold by the Junteh Trade Company in Kaohsiung City are also found to have high toxic levels.
The amount of pesticide is 27 times more than the allowed value.
The pesticide is called "Carbendazim", which will remain in the body and cause testicular damage and cancer.
While it's not uncommon to see toxic dried chrysanthemum flowers, the better way to protect oneself is to soak the dried flowers for several times in hot water to minimize any possible contamination.
