DOH ENCOURAGING FOR MORE DONORS
An event has been held to honor the body and organ donors by Chang Gung University, with medical students handing out flowers to family members of the contributors as a symbol of gratitude. Officials from the Department of Health are continuing to encourage and urge more individuals to support this good cause in giving others a second chance in life.
Five years ago, Ms. Chen was found to have kidney atrophy during a health check-up and was told last year that she needs dialysis for the rest of her life.
Fortunately, she got a chance of transplant and is ever so grateful to the donor.
Mrs. Chang, who lost her son in an accident, decides to donate her son's organs to those who need them the most.
As of this year, as high as 7,200 people across the country are waiting for organ transplants with the most wanted body parts being kidney and liver.
But only 131 patients are lucky enough to get a transplant so far. The success rate is less than 2%.
According to the Department of Health, the idea of donating organs is not widespread and acceptable in the society. When an accident happens, it's too late to decide whether to make the donation.
Chang Gung University has recently held a memorial service on March 26th for organ and body donors, where medical student representatives presented flowers to family members of donors to convey their gratitude.
Department of Health urges the public to also express their willingness to donate organs so patients who need organs can get a second chance in life.
