LEAVING THE LITTLE ONES BEHIND?
Global warming is affecting the long-tailed skink's parental behavior in the Lanyu area. It is found that the rising temperature has driven these lizards away to cooler places, causing them to leave their eggs in the caves behind to the predators.
Experts are worried that the change will lead to the decrease in the number of the skinks, not to mention the negative impact it may have on the local ecosystem.
The long-tailed skink lays several eggs in the concrete hole and all of a sudden a snake invades and wants to eat the eggs.
The mother lizard quickly attacks the invader to protect her eggs.
This is the unique egg-protecting behavior of Long-tailed skink in Lanyu.
To protect eggs from being eaten by snakes, mother lizards would lay eggs in concrete holes and will never leave them in a month.
This has gradually become a norm.
But some experts discover that the temperature of Lanyu has grown up by about 0.5 degree since 2001, which not only changes animal behaviors but could also worsen the condition in the future.
Experts say that the temperature changes of egg-laying site lowered the successful hatching rate from 80 percent to 20 percent last year, a phenomenon that could result in a damage of food chain balance.
