LAWMAKERS URGE REVISION OF THE RED CROSS ACT
In response to the recent controversy over the Red Cross Society's handling of relief fund, the Minister of the Interior, Chiang Yi-hua, said on Monday that the government will seriously consider making legislative amendments regarding the society if necessary.
The legislative committee invited Ministry of the Interior to make a special briefing on the dispute of the Red Cross Society's procedure in allocating funds.
Some legislators believe the Enforcement Rules for the Red Cross Society Act, which was written in 1954, has become insufficient to cope with the current situatioin.
Other legislators believe the Red Cross Society should be subject to the Statute Governing Donations for Public Interest Purposes and a separate act is not necessary.
Minister of the Interior Chiang Yi-hua says his ministry will consider the necessity of the law amendment.
The absence of president of the Red Cross Society C.V. Chen, who was invited to attend the meeting infuriated some DPP lawmakers.
On behalf of the organization, its vice secretary-general stresses the time span for international disaster relief plans usually last from three to six years and admits the lack of proper commication is what triggers the controversy.
