GIFTS OF COMPASSION
A rice shop in Taichung's Daijia District has been giving out free rice to low-income families over the past 6 months since its establishment. Even though the amount of rice given out for free has exceeded the amount sold, the shop owner said that she is happy to help people in need and will continue to do so as long as she can.
Two red signs hang outside this rice store.
Instead of prices, the signs welcome low-income people in for free rice.
Mrs. Chou and her son give away more rice than they sell, and distribute up to six catties of rice per person at once.
Since they opened the store six months ago, they have handed out more than 1,000 catties of rice.
Mrs. Chou says that she and her son are not wealthy and they only make enough to get by.
However, they recognize that they are more fortunate than many others, and low-income families in the area are extremely grateful to them.
Impressed by the Chous' generosity, area residents have also begun donating rice to their store so that their aid can reach more people.
