Rice Balls Hot in Demand
It is a Chinese tradition to get together with family members to eat "tangyuan" during Winter Solstice Festival, which symbolizes reunion. Businesses have been extremely busy making both sweet and savoury rice balls, with one Yunlin vendor hiring 20 more helpers to fulfill the 3,000 kilograms of orders.
Glutinous rice ball vendors in traditional markets were surrounded by consumers on Tuesday morning.
Wednesday is the Winter Solstice, and families will be celebrating by eating glutinous rice balls to symbolize the passing of another year.
One vendor hired more than 20 temporary workers to fulfill orders and make 3,000 kilograms of rice balls by Wednesday.
The vendor employs a traditional method for making rice balls, which involves thoroughly cleaning the rice, grinding the rice into rice milk, draining excess liquid, and using a machine to press out rice balls.
The vendor says that he has not adjusted prices despite the rising cost of glutinous rice this year.
During the rest of the year, the business consumes two to three packages of glutinous rice daily.
During the holiday season, however, the vendor goes through 80 packages of glutinous rice per day.
