WHAT ARE PEOPLE IN TAIPEI READING?
What are people in Taipei reading? According to the latest survey issued by the city government, translated novels are the most popular materials for Taipei's readers, with Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight" series being their number one choice.
Many Taipei city residents have developed a habit of borrowing books from libraries.
For example, Mr. Fu, who visits the library twice a week, simply takes home books using the automated system.
According to the usage statistics of 2010, the number of book loans exceeded 10 million for the first time and more than 2.07 million library cards have been issued.
On the average, each person borrows five books per year.
The most popular genres are novel and prose.
In the top 20 most borrowed books in the fiction category, almost all of them are translated novels.
The statistics indicate that borrowers in the 31 to 50 year old age demographic were responsible for 52% of the total loans made throughout the year.
The growth rate of avid readers among preschoolers is rising sharply, with the annual growth rate exceeding 20% in the last five years.
This makes the book loan rate among teenagers relatively lower than other age demographics and there are more female than male avid readers.
