Probe into Student Exploitation
After a series of exploitation claims from students working in school-enterprise cooperation programs, the Council of Labor Affairs recently conducted an in-depth investigation, and found legal violations in 38 out of 51 programs. Offending employers may face a fine of up to 60,000 NT dollars.
Having worked long hours everyday, the teenage girl makes only 300 NTD after two weeks' work.
Mr. Chen took his daughter to host the press conference, accusing that students in cooperative programs are used as cheap labor.
In another case, a young man was asked to cover the night shift and makes only 50 NTD per hour.
These cases of exploiting students in such programs have caused a lot of disputes.
Council of Labor Affairs discloses the investigation results of the project for the first time.
Out of the 51 enterprises that Ministry of Education approved to enroll students in cooperative education, 38 of them violated the law.
The percentage is as high as 75%.
31.6% of them failed to submit a training contract to the supervising authorities.
11.4% of them recruited the number of students, which exceeds one fourth of the full-time employee number.
Other violations include not granting holidays to the students according to the law.
Council of Labor Affairs says the list of illegal companies will be sent to local governments for penalty, which could be 60,000 NTD at maximum.
Ministry of Education will also enchance its supervising effort and review the projects annually to protec the rights of students in cooperative education.
