AN EXTRAORDINARY DESIGNER
In our next story, we will introduce you to a professional designer, who never knew she had so much talent in the field until two years ago.
This is Cheng Ling. She calls herself a novice in the field of graphic design, even though she has been painting for over five years. But her creativity has been recognized by Microsoft and I-Mei Multimedia e-content company.
She designed the protective case for the Micorsoft's Window 7 tablet for this year's spring computer exposition, and her picture book for children was selected by I-Mei as one of the major e-products, which will soon be available for smart phone users to download.
And that is not the only project she is undertaking. She is also designing the pc desktop for Microsoft, which is expected to be released this summer.
For Cheng Ling, painting is a way to talk to herself and to keep a record of her life. But it actually has more to do with her disease, Spinal Muscular Atrophy, a rare and genetic disease that attacks her nerve cells in spinal cord, and will gradually result in loss of mobility and motor function and eventually death.
She was diagnosed with the disease when she was four, and as the disease progresses, it gradually steals her abilities.
"I have spinal muscular atrophy,
which is a genetic disease.
I was born with it.
The feature of the disease is that it progresses as I grow up,
and I gradually lose my strength.
I was diagnosed with it when I was four,
and when I was a third grader,
I couldn't carry my backpack to school,
and I fell often.
As for me, my condition started to deteriorate,
it was the onset of my disease,
and I had to rely on the wheelchair to move around when I was 14 years old,
because I had totally lost the ability to walk."
At the age of 14, she was shut down in her wheelchair and her connection to the outer world was cut off. In the times when the level of public acceptance for physically challenged people was low and the concept of barrier-free environment was not popular, it was very difficult for Cheng Ling to go out.
She could only express her own feelings and her points of view through painting. It was not until five years ago when she was given an electric wheelchair that she was finally reconnected to the world outside her house.
She started to go to painting lessons, only to find that her trembling hands couldn't even draw a straight line as other people did.
Just as she was about to give up, her painting teacher looked at her lines, and said "You've got a unique style of your lines, which is something other people can't copy. Maybe this can be your signature style."
She then realized that imperfection can also mean "unique", and everything has a different angle to look from and at.
She started to try different things, such as painting, learning French, and even traveling abroad.
At Boracay, Philippine, she went diving for the first time in her life, with the diving coach holding her neck up above the water, and other people helping her put on the diving equipments in water.
At first, she couldn't dive because she was too nervous. She tried and tried and finally, she told herself that she must not give up, because it was just this close to her dream.
"When I was resting in water, I told myself, it would be a great pity if I couldn't dive. Really, I've come all the way here, I've put on the equipments, and everyone around me has done so much for me.
I have to be brave.
I told myself to be brave, to overcome the fear.
I succeeded as I made my third attempt to dive."
In the clear blue underwater world, along with the beautiful tropical fish, she tasted the happiness from overcoming her fear. The experience taught her that nothing is impossible.
From then on, she became braver, and more daring to embrace the world and her life, with the little strength she had left.
"Because in recent years, probably because of my age, my physical condition deteriorates much faster than before.
That makes me realize that I've wasted too much time fearing.
I used to worry that once I go out, will there be stairs that get in my way? Will there be people reluctant to help me?
There were too many things to worry.
I was afraid of being stared at.
I thought a lot.
Even though my friends said they would help me,
I was worried that I may trouble them,
and they would stop making friends with me.
I just thought a lot, and my thoughts were holding me back every time I wanted to go out."
And now, if I can want to do something, I will make it happen, even though I am afraid, I will do it while I still can."
Refusing to let fear get in her way, she said she had wasted so much time fearing, thinking, and waiting.
The experience changed her attitude, and her life. Despite being rejected by different travel agencies for over 10 times, she traveled by herself to India, where she saw Taj Mahal, experienced a dessert climate, and felt the warmth of people of India.
She is in wheelchair, but she has walked further than many people have.
She can only lift up her arms to the level of her chest, but she has opened up infinite possibilities for her life.
Cheng Ling said, that she doesn't know how long she will live, for her disease is still threatening her life every day.
She can only seize every minute she has to paint, to see the world, to do whatever she wants to do.
But for the near future, we've known that her schedule is already full. She will be joining the art project of the renowned Taiwanese sculptor, Juming at his Museum along with other artists this summer, and she is already preparing for her solo exhibition next year.
So it can be expected that she will keep bringing us more lively and wonderful works that reflect her energy and tell the story of her life.
