BRINGING THE LILIES BACK
One man is bringing lilium longiflorum back, a type of lily that is mostly found in the east coast of Taiwan and its outlying islands. The flower is hardly visible now because of the recent land development, but through the ambition and determination of this individual, it is no longer impossible to visualize this spectacular sight.
When it blossoms, longflower lily looks like a suona, an old Chinese musical instrument.
Native to Taiwan, the flower was always seen in coastal areas in Eastern Taiwan and outlying islands such as the Green Island and Lanyu. But because of urban development, it's rare to see them now.
The restoration efforts in recent years are being made.
However, due to the environment, the amount is limited.
A priest in Lanyu, who is also doing the restoration work for the flower, planted many flower bulbs in a taro farm.
Thanks to the natural environment of the farm, which requires constant flowering water and sun, the flowers successfully blossom this year, creating a unique scene in the island.
Some locals who also keep taro farm decide to follow suits.
The priest hopes the success can be an inspiration to others and more longflower lily can blossom on taro farms next year.
