SPORTS LEGENDS ON THEIR WAY TO THE PARLIAMENT?
They are undoubtedly Taiwan's athletic legends, but will their success in sports translate to the political arena? Former basketball star Chien Wei-chuan and retired baseball hero Chao Shi-chiang are now both considering joining the legislative race next January, and may announce their respective decisions very soon.
Barely two months after Chien Wei-chuan ended her illustrious 25-year career as a basketball player, she seems to be on the cusp of a new venture in politics.
It has been reported recently that the KMT is trying hard to enlist Chien as its candidate in the legislative election next January.
Analysts say that the KMT's attempt may be driven by the following considerations:
First, Chien has arguably been the most recognizable face in women's basketball of Taiwan over the past two decades, and her immense popularity was evident in the farewell game last March at Hsin-chuang, where thousands of adoring fans packed the stadium to witness the historic moment.
Second, the 40-year-old Chien is relatively young for politicians, and would help to give the KMT a more youthful image.
But Chien is still unsure about whether she would make the career switch, saying on Tuesday there is only a 45% chance so far that she'll join the race. And she will make a final decision in a week's time.
Meanwhile, the DPP is targeting former baseball star Chao Shi-chiang as its potential legislative candidate.
The 51-year-old Chao is no stranger to political campaigns, having helped former pitcher Huang Ping-yang to be elected as Taipei City councilor last year.
But Chao has not yet made up his mind on running for public office himself, saying he first needs to be certain that he won't become the political equivalent of a "sacrifice hit."
