Development of Enterovirus Vaccine
ADImmune Corporation has announced its new breakthrough on the research and development of its self-developed enterovirus vaccine on Tuesday. With the vaccine now entering the phase of human trials, it is expected to be in the market in two to three years, which will likely to protect 200 to 300 thousand children from the attack of enterovirus every year.
Children getting a flu shot is nothing new.
However, the greatest threat to infants and young children in Taiwan is enterovirus, and in the future, we may also have a vaccine to prevent this.
According to the Centers for Disease Control statistics, Taiwan enterovirus infection in each year may reach 200,000 to 300,000.
Most parents fear enterovirus 71, which is the most severe case occurring in 12 out of every 16 people sick with the disease and only 4 with the Coxsackie virus.
Doctors have observed that, in recent years, symptoms of enterovirus, in addition to fever and blisters, the body could also be covered with a rash and conjunctivitis.
The age of those affected range from young children to middle school, and if a vaccine is available, it could help reduce the risk of infection.
Physicians believe that the best way to prevent enterovirus is through a vaccine which begins human trials this year.
If everything goes smoothly, it could go onto the market in 2 to 3 years.
While we wait for the vaccine, parents and children are reminded to frequently wash their hands to protect themselves from the threat of enterovirus.
