The Centers for Disease Control has been under fire after releasing the first

NDM-1 infected patient from the hospital. To ensure the public's safety and to show that it's all under control, the Department of Health Minister, Yaung Chih-liang, has vowed to step down if the island experiences any kind of "superbug" outbreak.

Health Minister Yaung Chih-Liang early in the morning appeared at the Legislative Yuan making assurances to everyone that a superbug, NDM-1 epidemic will not spread.

Taiwan has recently encountered its first case of the "superbug" as a local carrier returned home, and was released from the hospital.

Not only has this led legislators to worry, but even the medical community fear transmission of the "superbug".

The Health Minister admitted that the "superbug" has traveled around the world, though adding that Taiwan cannot stop all its economic activity.

Yaung emphasized that the "superbug" has only two antibiotics that are effective against it.

Still, once one is infected, it is likely to lead to sepsis though superbug infection is not easily transmitted, as it must enter through an open wound.

Even in patients with cough, or those spitting in front of you the risk of infection is very low.

This first case in Taiwan was that of a photographer who had no symptoms and after returning home to normal life found out he had it.

For people to guard against the "superbug", the most important thing they should remember is good personal hygiene and avoiding panic.
