Tw's First Bicycle for the Disabled
The Cycling and Health Industry Research and Development Center has showcased Taiwan's first bicycle for the physically challenged individuals. After the test ride, many disable people were satisfied with the creative design.
Cycling has become the hottest leisure sport in Taiwan with a growing number of people spending their weekends on their bikes.
However, for physically disabled people, it's almost an activity impossible to participate in.
With the support from the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Cycling and Health Industry Research and Development Center has produced the first bicycle designed exclusively for physically disabled users.
The bicycle, name Freedom, is pedaled by hands and it moves just as freely as normal bicycles.
Well, even better than normal bicycles.
It can go forward and backward.
Moreover, it is a multi-speed bicycle, which allows users to select the appropriate gear ratio to suit the circumstances, whether it is going uphill or downhill.
Also, users can place their crutches at the side of the bike without worrying how to carry them during the ride.
In order to make it easy for users to get on and off the bike, the bicycle seat is lower than the average ones.
Many disabled people participated in the test ride and gave positive comments on the product.
Even the legislator, Shyu, Jong-Shyoung, who is a Polio patient himself, was excited about the ride, saying that he felt that he was a real bicyclist on the road.
He even said that he wanted to make a bike tour around the island.
The bikes are expected to be in mass production in half a year.
