DISASTER DRILLS FOR KIDS
The government is bringing the rescue knowledge into the classroom, and teachers are now given the duty to calm the little ones if situation arises. Here on CTS, let's head to this kindergarten in Taipei, to check out the necessary procedures.
When the earthquake hit, children in the kindergarten quickly held up their bags and placed them on top of their heads for protection. Ten seconds later as the quake stopped, children followed teachers' instructions and evacuated from the classrooms to the sport ground.
It was the first time that these little ones participated in a drill, and many of them paid full attention to the teacher's instructions, including those that help them lessen their nervousness through the practice of breathing.
One of the teachers said that even though the students have attended disaster prevention courses, and have watched DVDs, but a drill will help them to remember what they should do to protect themselves when an emergency happens. Children and teachers both need disaster prevention courses. Some teachers said that a drill per year is not enough, and schools should conduct similar drills more often.
Some teachers even said that they only started to capture emergency response knowledge after they became teachers, and they believe the government should increase teacher's knowledge base of emergency response procedures, or even make it one of the standards for teacher certification. In this way, teachers can really help children respond properly when an emergency happens.
