Change is upon us with the KMT party taking down three out of the five municipalities during the mayoral race, while the DPP won domination in the south, in Tainan and Kaohsiung. Despite of KMT's greater control in the overall picture, the numbers show that DPP had a higher voter turnout, exceeding the KMT by more than 400,000 votes.

In this election, the KMT wins in Taipei, Xinbei and Taichung.

But the Secretary-General King Pu-tsun said, the party needs to be more humble and vigilant as the DPP actually collected more votes.

The DPP clinched two out of the five special municipalities in Southern Taiwan, the chairperson Tsai Ing-wen said it was a glorious defeat.

While the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) did not make advances north of the Jhuoshui River - the general boundary demarcating Taiwan's northern and southern regions - in yesterday's mayoral races, the elections gave the party a big boost in morale, as it won the popular vote.

Earlier DPP Secretary-General Wu Nei-ren once said that those with impressive performances in the election are eligible to run the 2012 presidential election.

Besides Su Jen-chang and Tsai Ing-wen, Su Jia-chung, who was only 30,000 votes away from winning the Taichung City mayoral election, is also believed to be a possible candidate for the election.

Although the five special municipality elections just concluded yesterday, political parties are to begin the campaign for the 2012 presidential elections.
