GRAPE GROWTH DELAYED BY COLD WEATHER
The unusually cold weather this year has delayed the growth of various crops in Taiwan, including the Kyoho Grapes in Changhua County.
Even though the harvest season is usually in May, farmers said that the fruit is expected to hit the shelves one month later this year.
Still, they are feeling optimistic about this year's harvest because the insufficient rainfall is making the grapes even sweeter than before.
Wearing in the special shoes, women in Erlin Township are cutting off the abnormal grapes in the vineyard to ensure the quality and sweetness of the grapes.
Farmers said that the low temperature earlier this year has reduced the flowering of the grapes.
Farmers had to try increase the flowering for the second and even third time, leading to an increase in the growing cost.
Still, the rainfall during the flowering period was little, which helped to raise the production volume of grapes.
Even though the farmer's association believes that the harvest this year is comparatively good, farmers still need to pay attention to the coming spring rainfall, for too much or too few rainfall will both influence the growth of the grapes.
Farmers can only hope that the weather will be fine, and the harvest won't be affected.
