Three young farmers have succeeded in growing high-quality lettuces by overcoming the climate and land conditions in Yunlin County's Mailiao Township. Through close collaboration with each other, the siblings have generated a total of 80 million NT dollars in sales for the family business last year.

Kuo Shu-fen discusses operations with workers at the lettuce packaging factory, as her brothers tend to other matters in their family business.

Although all three are around the average age of just thirty, they have already successfully developed an annual eighty million NT dollar business exporting lettuce.

Kuo Shu-fen remarks on the hard labor that her father once went through in growing vegetables.

While good harvest years drive down profits per unit sold, her father has little to sell during years when vegetables are sold for higher prices.

Thus, Kuo Shu-fen decided to return home after earning an education in finance and business administration to help her father streamline the business and maximize profits.

The harsh terrain and climate of Mailiao Township, Yunlin County, make agriculture in the area difficult.

However, there has been a recent developed interested in sophisticated agriculture combined with strategic planning and management.

Kuo says last year the family received a shipment order from the US for over 80 crates, while nearly 200 crates were shipped abroad.

This year, the family currently has received shipment orders totaling over 100 crates and it is estimated that export revenue will reach one billion NT dollars.

This is certainly quite a unique occurrence in the agricultural industry.
