NURSE SHORTAGE PUTS KIDS AT RISK
According to the School Nurses Association, the shortage of nurses has spread from hospitals to schools, where nurses are forced to meet multiple medical demands.
The situation is even worse in Nantou, Pingtung and Penghu Counties, where some schools don't even have a nurse on campus.
The association is now urging local governments to tackle the problem for the protection of school children.
Both hospitals and schools around the island are coping with a shortage of nurses.
New Taipei City is supposed to have 421 school nurses on its payroll, but the actual number stands at 315.
According to the School Nurses Association of the Republic of China, there is currently a shortage of 800 school nurses around Taiwan.
The situation is the most severe in Nantou County, Pingtung County, and Penghu County, with many schools having no nurses on staff.
The Association has also discovered that the shortage has resulted in many school nurses being forced into performing administrative work.
The Ministry of Education's Department of Physical Education says that general subsidy restrictions have already been relaxed this year to allow schools to hire nurses using administrative vacancies, and that the problem should be gradually resolved.
