FIGHTING FOR WATER
Following the drought in the western part of the island, a yellow warning has been issued in Yunlin County for its insufficient supply. With the low level of water, local farmers are struggling to keep their crops alive, and have since questioned Yunlin Irrigation Association's decision of the distribution of water for industrial use. To ease their concern, the association said that companies are restricted to only use around 2 to 3 percent of the overall water supply.
In light of high temperatures and the drought, it's been reported there are some damages of crops in western Taiwan.
The Chi Chi river den, which has been short of water for a long while, has reduced the daily water by 30 percent.
The crop of the last rice cultivation requires a lot of water now.
Farmers are really worried the insufficient water supply may cause more financial losses.
Local farmers question the Yunlin Irrigation Association's decision to distribute the water supply for industrial use while there's not enough water for irrigation.
The association says the decision is made to work with the government policy and the water is from what is saved from irrigation management.
So it won't affect the normal irrigation system.
But farmers seem to have a different view.
The association stresses that it would enhance its water management effort but more water rationing measures would have to be implemented if there's no rain by the end of May.
