CLA: 19% OF SECURITY GUARDS UNDERPAID
Here in Taiwan, at least 80,000 people are employed as security guards. However, many of them are underpaid for their hard work. According to the Council of Labor Affairs' recent survey, over 21% of security companies violated the Labor Standard Law by forcing the employees to work overtime without compensation, while 19% of them fail to pay their employees the minimum wage.
It's hard being a securities worker who must guard front gates, ensure public safety, check visitor permits, answer calls, and distribute mail.
Not only must workers multitask, they must also work long hours without overtime pay.
Mr. Chang who has quit his job as a security guard described his job as too much work with too little pay.
In addition, many employers do not abide by minimum wage regulations.
The Council of Labor Affairs has for the first time conducted an investigation into 50 business of this industry.
They found that out of the fifty, 31 failed to follow regulations, equal to 62% of the industry.
Twenty-one percent of the businesses in the industry failed to pay for overtime work and 19% did not meet minimum wage requirements.
The CLA did not release the name list of the businesses which did not meet regulations, only stating that local authorities will be passing out fines from 6 to 60 thousand NT dollars.
However, labor groups are urging the CLA to review the 84th clause of the labor standards act, which allows a situation in which security workers to work much longer hours than workers in other industries.
It's causing a current situation in which over 80 thousand security guards must endure long work hours and low wages.
