Landslide Buries Nine
Good morning and thank you for tuning in to CTS News. I'm Cary Chuo.
Torrential rain across Yilan has caused a landslide in Suao township that destroyed a local temple and two nearby houses, burying nine people. And despite more than ten hours of rescue efforts, all of them were confirmed to be dead yesterday morning.
As the excavator digs through wreckage, soldiers do their best to clear away rubble.
Torrential rains brought by Typhoon Megi caused a landslide on Friday that buried the White Cloud Temple and two residences.
Some of the victims' family members said that they received frantic phone calls from the victims before lines went dead.
The nine people that went missing included the owner of one of the residences, two monks, three temple volunteers and a family of three that had stopped at the temple to wait out the rain.
The youngest victim was just three years old.
The county government sent two additional excavators to the site after the landslide occurred,
and rescue workers found the first of the nine victims, a 70-year old monk, at 4 p.m.
The last of the bodies was recovered at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.
