Youth Ngos Assessments
Five municipal year end elections are entering the final stage of the campaign as 30 youth oriented NGOs reviewed youth policies of these 11 candidates. Only Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chu passed their review. Candidates in these five municipal elections did not meet the requirements of these youth groups as they remarked that politicians frequently say one thing and the do another as they have few expectations for these politicians.
12 to 24 year old youth may not have the right to vote though they will eventually affect the future of the country. 30 youth group NGOs commented on the youth policy of candidates in year end municipal elections. They carried out a survey which was later published regarding social, cultural, leisure and employment policy appraisals with only Kaohsiung's Mayor Chen Chu passing this review of 11 candidates. These NGOs pointed out that the unemployment rate between 15 to 24 year olds averaged 11%, far higher than the general unemployment rate.
They asked for employment policy breakthroughs with current youth leisure activities having insufficient space. Furthermore, they said that some candidates had made commitments, but did not detail a specific approach. These groups urged candidates to understand the real needs of young people and make it one of their top priorities.
