Airport Makeover
Taoyuan International Airport officially became a state-run corporation, with Transportation and Communications Deputy Minister Yeh Kuang-shih now serving as the airport's first chairman. With a goal of turning its negative reputation around, Yeh said that he hopes to make Taoyuan Airport among the world's top ten within the next three years.
Taoyuan International Airport officially became a state-run corporation on November 1st.
The change follows in the wake of a number of hardware upgrades and new facilities, and is aimed at improving the airport's quality of service and image.
The corporation was jointly formed by the Ministry of Transportation and Communications and a Civic Aeronautic Administration foundation, in which Deputy Minister of Transportation and Communications Yeh Kuang-shih has been appointed the airport's first chairman.
One of Yeh's first tasks at hand will be overseeing the construction of a third, 60 billion NT terminal slated for completion in 2018.
In terms of organizational structure, the airport is parallel to the CAA, and Transportation and Communications Minister Mao Chi-kuo says that he will be using Chunghwa Telecom's operational model in separating policy and management.
Taoyuan International Airport currently ranks ninth and 18th in the world, respectively, in freight and passenger volume.
The third terminal will increase the airport's annual passenger capacity by 43 million, and officials hope that direct flights between Taipei and Beijing, Tokyo, and Seoul can become realities in the future.
