Watch Out for Pneumonia
With the temperature dropping, a 30 percent increase in the number of cases of pneumonia has been reported, with most of the patients being under the age of seven. With the disease posing great risk to those who have weak immune system, doctors are reminding parents to have their little ones checked out to if they experience similar symptoms.
This 1-year old boy is being looked after by his nanny. He looks quite uncomfortable as a cold seems not to have improved as he is now at a large hospital for a check-up.
He is having an x-ray which may come as a surprise for some people who think he may only have a cold.
In fact, he actually has pneumonia due to this cold weather.
Hospitals are seeing more and more children coming down with pneumonia.
This recent wave of pneumonia is really quite bad as this one-year-old girl also comes for an x-ray as she has a temperature of 40 degrees, which did not subside after 7 days as the doctor looked a little surprised.
This could be quite serious and if it dragged on longer, this white part of the lungs could deteriorate and require surgery.
This pneumonia is not the same as a typical pneumonia which is caused by streptococcus but rather mycoplasma pneumonia with initial symptoms being like a cold with fever and mild cough though some may not experience a cough.
This means that it could be easily overlooked by many people.
Doctors say that people should get in the habit of wearing masks and frequent hand-washing.
And in the case of high fever, one should immediately go to the hospital to avoid this life-threatening pneumonia.
