2010 Premium Rice
Results of the annual Taiwan Premium Rice Competition have just been announced, and the eldest winner this year is a 76-year-old farmer from Yunlin County, who said he had been waiting for decades to earn the recognition.
Farmer Lin of Donggang Township of Pingtung County cheers excitedly after winning the Taiwan Premium Rice Exhibition.
No one expected that the renowned provider of Blufin Tuna in Pingtung could also win an award in rice production after entering the competition for only the second time.
Lin hopes that this award will give Donggang the reputation of being a renowned provider of both fish and rice.
While some people were able to win the award after just entering the contest a second time, some contestants waited 10 years for the award, such as 76-year-old Li Qing-biao of Yunlin County.
After 43 years of rice farming, Li has finally earned the approval of the judges and become one of the winners of this year's Taiwan Premium Rice Exhibition.
The ten winners were chosen from over 1600 rice farmers.
All ten winners claim that they treat their rice plantations as their own children.
In addition, they had to control the use of fertilizer and understand soil conditions.
Farmer Chen of Taichung County has already won the award three times.
He says that as long as he can produce high quality rice, he is confident that he will not have to worry about sales competition.
Winning rice must have a full shape and must be chewy and aromatic.
Although rice farming earns farmers only a humble income, farmers still diligently toil away because it is a food staple.
And the good thing is rice will always be in need whether economic conditions are good or bad.
