919 Flood Caught on Camera
The flood last Sunday has wreaked havoc on Wandan Township of Pingtung County, destroying the main road of the Hsin-hua community as well as facilities of a local elementary school.
This is how it looked when Hsinghua Primary school was flooded by the September 19 typhoon rainwaters.
The video was taken by a teacher who had returned to the school on the day of the typhoon.
Flood waters reached knee high and the teacher wanted to salvage expensive elecontronic equipment.
What the teacher saw upon entering the classroom were chairs and documents floating in the flood waters.
The water flow was also becoming more rushed as it flooded into the office.
Water levels also continued to rise as waves pounded in unmercifully.
The teacher was unfortunately unable to move anything to safety.
After two days, the flood finally receded, and all of the computers that weren't salvaged were destroyed.
Equipment in the drawers were also soaked in water.
The teacher said that flood waters reached 120cm high, almost to chest high, and higher than the August 8 flood disaster last year.
With help, the teacher carried the mud-covered desks, chairs, and books out to be dried by the sun.
Another area which needs to be restored is the Hsing-nan Road in the Hsing-hua area.
The road was destroyed by the flood and over one meter of it is still submerged in water.
One of the areas of the road has accumulated a pool of water the size of a soccer field, making the pool look like a lake.
The flood and fallen electric poles by the road have made traveling from Wandan Township to Chaochou unlikely.
Town residents are dejected because their beloved town has been destroyed.
