With Typhoon Fanapi closing in, consumers around Taiwan rushed to purchase vegetables on Friday in anticipation of imminent price hikes. However, the prices of some agricultural products rose even faster than these savvy buyers could expect.

Market workers were kept busy on Friday restocking vegetable bins as housewives rushed to stock up on produce.

One hypermart held a special sale on vegetables, offering onions for 9 NT and sweet potato greens and corn for just 8 NT.

Leafy vegetables, including bok choy, Chinese mustard greens, and rapaseed, meanwhile, were available for just 7 NT per bunch.

While hypermarts were able to offer special deals, produce prices at traditional markets were on the rise.

In particular, Sanhsing scallion prices rose 40% from 64 NT per kilogram to 90 NT per kilogram.

Those that are looking to save money should visit the market before the Mid-Autumn Festival, and before the typhoon arrives.
