An Inventive Cancer Survivor
A 72-year-old man in Taichung County has been afflicted with seven forms of cancer over the past 15 years. But he has remained positive about life and devoted himself to the invention of creative cutting tools. Now he's not just a much healthier man, but an award-winning inventor as well.
It's hard to tell from this vigorous inventor's appearance that he is already 72 years old, and it's even more surprising to know that he is a survivor of seven forms of cancer. Mr. Chiu used to be a truck driver by trade. Under the pressure of his demanding job, he picked up such unhealthy habits as smoking and betel nut chewing, while developing a lifestyle characterized by irregular meal schedules and random sleeping pattern.
All of them have taken their toll on his body. For the past 15 years, he's been diagnosed with various forms of cancer in his kidney, testicles and intestines. But Chiu never gave up hope, determined instead to devote his remaining days to the invention of cutting tools that provide users with more efficient and sanitary ways of slicing fruit.
It is Chiu's goal to better protect people from fruit contamination through his inventions. And his efforts didn't go in vain. In recent years, Chiu has won multiple inventor's awards for his works, and now he's also the owner of at least four patents. Yet all these achievements pale in comparison to the fact that, when a man is driven by a passion to benefit the public through invention, not even multiple types of cancer can take him down.
