Double Disaster
The Typhoon Morakot victims are not getting a break from Mother Nature.
The recent rain in southern Taiwan is destroying the roads in the flood-affected area, making the travel route almost impossible for farmers.
Some are going by foot just to attend the event organized by Kaoshiung County Government, in an attempt to boost the sales of their local produce.
The car full of mangoes are still green, but are being sold. Farmers carried these mangoes from Taoyuan Township's Fuxing Village on their backs for 3 hours because roads into the mountain were destroyed. They walked out of the mountain and then loaded the mangoes on to cars to attend the sale. People started buying the mangoes when they heard they came from disaster areas.
Kaohsiung County's mountain roads have been constantly destroyed due to this year's frequent rains. Last season's plum didn't make it to the market because they couldn't be delivered. Although many distributors are buying mangoes during this season, some farmers are still having a hard time selling their fruit.
Thus, Kaohsiung County Government held this 2-day sales event. But some farmers could only sell lily fruit and tea leaves because the roads were destroyed. Although the government has already allocated money to fix the roads, these produce still can't be transported to the markets. The farmers hope the government can pick up its pace in fixing the roads.
