Around 2,000 families in the Mexico City neighborhood of Cuautitlan have been forced to evacuate their homes -- after torrential rainfall sparked massive flooding, leaving homes and vehicles submerged. In some areas, flood waters reached two meters high. Police and emergency crews are helping residents salvage what's left of their belongings. Resident Tania Garduno said "The entire first floor flooded, there was only about 60 centimeters of roof space left. The furniture in the living room was submerged because we couldn't get to it on time. We didn't realize the magnitude of the flooding." Governor Enrique Pena Nieto said it's been difficult to reach some of the more seriously affected areas. Governor of State Enrique Pena Nieto said "It is an area that you cannot even enter. We are talking about homes that are now practically inside a lagoon. It is a lagoon with levels at least two or more meters high and the residents are going to have to wait for the National Water Commission to drain the water in the area." The heavy rainfall over the weekend died down on Monday, but the flooding remained. With some 40,000 people affected by the flooding, Mexico City's water management team is working overtime to drain water from the area.
