An earthquake measuring 3.4 in magnitude hit the Wulai district of New Taipei City on Monday, being the first "felt earthquake" ever recorded with epicenter in the famous tourist area. The Central Weather Bureau said the incident is very likely the result of seismic activity along local blind thrust faults, and has nothing to do with the massive quake in Japan last month.

Fushan of Wulai in New Taipei City is one of the most popular destinations for mountain climbers and bikers.

The Central Weather Bureau detected a magnitude 3.4 earthquake at 8:13 Monday evening.

It is also the first felt earthquake detected with its epicenter in Wulai since Taiwan established the seismic network.

The Central Weather Bureau belives the earthquake is associated with seismic activity on blind thrust faults.

Within 48 hours, there have been several earthquakes throughout the island.

At 4 o'clock in the morning, a magnitude 4 earthquake was detected in south of Nantou.

There were earthquakes detected in Ilan and Kaohsiung.

The Central Weather Bureau says that it's unlikely to see

major earthquake since there have been small,frequent earthquakes, but it stresses that the several earthquakes have nothing to do with Japan as they are seismic activities of different faults.

The public shouldn't worry too much.
