She is one of Taiwan's most successful entertainers for the past 30 years, and may just be the hardest working person in show business. In our next story, we offer you a look back at renowed TV host Chang Hsiao-yen's extraordinary career. She is the undisputed queen of Taiwan's show business, entertaining audiences over six decades, first as a child actress, then as movie star, and most importantly, as TV variety show host. Chang Hsiao-yen started her acting career at the tender age of five. In 1958, the 10-year-old Chang was honored for the first time with the Best Child Actress Award of the Asia Pacific Film Festival, a recognition she earned for three consecutive years. But as she grew up, Chang had to face a difficult decision concerning whether to stay in show business or not. "My family told me to give it up. But I didn't want to." "Because you like it so much?" "I just want to give it another try." After graduating from high school, Chang at first served as a children's show host, and also appeared in comedy sketches for variety shows. But she refused to be pigeonholed as a comedian. In 1981, Chang starred in the CTS drama "Let's Catch the Stars Tonight," playing an aging sex worker opposite Lee Li-chun, who was trying to prove his acting range beyond a funny man image. "You're still here?" "I've got something to say. In today's video game, we ended up in a tie. So I'd like to ask you out some other day to break the tie. Okay?" "When I first read the script, I wanted to do it. But back then people were skeptical of comedians trying to do serious roles. As if comedians can't really act, which I disagree. So I said 'Li-chun, let's do it. Show them that we can act!' It was interesting." And that performance earned her a Golden Bell Award for Best Actress in the following year. Despite her success as an actress, Chang's greatest achievement in showbiz lies in variety show hosting. "Let's welcome the host-Chang Hsiao-yen!" "Variety 100," which ran for 5 seasons on CTS until 1984, is one of the most successful shows in Taiwan's TV history, having won a total of 10 Golden Bell Awards. And Chang's sign-off song at the end of each episode, titled "Goodbye Dear Friends," has become part of the collective memory of an entire generation of TV audiences. After "Variety 100," Chang went on to host a series of other popular variety shows, including "Weekend Pie" and "Super Sunday." Over the years, Chang has been constantly trying to improve her shows and her own performance. And she recently admitted that even after decades of experience as an entertainer, she still hasn't fully conquered her stage fright. "I'm a TV fan myself.
