CROSS-STRAIT ENGLISH & MATH CONTEST FOR ELEMENTARY STUDENTS
In a recent cross-strait English and math contest for over 2,000 elementary school students, a team from Shanghai won the overall championship by edging competitors from Tainan. But Taiwanese teams in general gave a strong performance this time, winning a total of five gold medals.
Lin Feng-yi, a sixth grader of Datung elementary school of Taoyuan County, is all smiles as he has achieved perfect scores in the international math competition two years in a row.
By studying on his own, he is now capable of doing high school math.
Lin Guan-yu, who's also a gold medal winner in the math competition, has been great in abacus and mental math since he was young and has achieved good grades in numerous math competitions.
The Cross-Strait English and Math competition for fifth and sixth graders has been held for four years.
This year, over 2,000 students signed up for the challenge.
Although Team Taiwan won the group gold medal of English and Math, the overall grade is behind that of Team Shanghai due to the inferior performance in English tests.
According to the organizer, such competition is to encourage participants to demonstrate their capabilities as an individual and as part of the team.
Next year, it would continue to invite students from Shanghai to attend the contest and will add a new category to accommodate third and fourth graders.
