The New Taipei City government has pushed back the school's starting time by one hour, to give the little ones an additional hour to sleep in, following a recent discovery that indicates the children in Taiwan sleep about 30 minutes to 1 hour less than those from other Asian countries.

But after putting it in to practice, 70 percent of parents are actually not in favor of the change, with many saying that the adjustment is making them late for work.

New Taipei City's Haishan Elementary School typically requires students to go to school at 8 AM.

Now it is intending to undertake a pilot program potentially moving school times later in the day.

Parents are divided over this plan.

New Taipei City's interest in implementing flexible school times is a way of working with parents.

Haishan Elementary School last month, took a survey of parents, finding that 8 to 1 would rather maintain the status quo. That means starting school at 8 AM.

New Taipei City's Bureau of Education surveyed 360,000 elementary and junior high students finding that parents 7 to 5 largely favor of the status quo, with only 22% supporting later school times.

For this reason, the Department of Education respects the majority of parents who don't want to change school times.

However, schools in remote areas, may be able to change school times by making an application to the Department of Education and achieving consensus with parents.
