To prevent radioactive contaminated products from entering Taiwan's market, the authorities announced yesterday that in addition to food products, other merchandise imported from Japan will also undergo radiation inspection as well. And products that fail to meet the required standards will be sent back or destroyed.

Officials of Department of Health would first take some samples of Japanese food products at the immigration custom and send the samples to the Atomic Energy Council for radiation detection.

According to Department of Health, besides the routine work of inspecting fresh and frozen produces and seafoods, enhanced efforts will be made on processed foods manufactured after March 12th, including instant noodles and cookies.

If the foods are found to have excessive radiation levels, they will be returned or destroyed.

However, in recent cases, the Department of Health will hand over the products to the Atomic Energy Council for further process.

Starting from today, Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection will carry out a boarder inspection on one out of every 20 batches if they are on the list of 658 Japanese products.

If the radiation levels exceed the standard, the products would be returned to the exporters or destroyed.
