An invention inspired by the August 8th flood in 2009 has come to fruition earlier this month. A group of teenage students in Taitung spent two years creating an alarm system that would automatically warn drivers of broken bridges ahead. And the invention recently won them a patent on March 11th, the day the massive earthquake hit Japan. Shocked and moved by the disaster, they now decide to donate their patent to the government in order to save more lives.

As the global climate changes more quickly and drastically these years, people are seeing more serious natural disasters and damages caused by them, including roads and bridges swept away and human casualties.

In order to caution drivers when a disaster happens, after the 88 flooding two years ago, five students from Kung Tung Technical Senior High School decided to design a bridge warning system, which will issue warnings when there are potential dangers in bridge structures.

The design cost them only 500 NT dollars, and will warn drivers not to drive over the bridges with sirens and lights. After nearly two years of research and improvement, they received the national patent for the bridge warning system on the 11th of this month, exactly when the devastating earthquake hit Japan.

The five young individuals soon decided to donate the patent to the government in order to save more lives.

In fact, the Ministry of Transportations and Communications has once contacted the school in an attempt to use the design on the roadways and bridges.

With the students donating their invention to the government, the design will be installed along roadways and bridges across the country.

And the five students' achievement doesn't just stop here.

They are going to present this invention at an international science affair held in Malaysia this May, to help more people in the world.
