RAINMAKING ATTEMPT IN TAITUNG
The River Management Bureau of Taitung County recently attempted to create artificial rain to reduce airborne dust along the Beinan river. And intermittent rain did occur shortly after the bureau's latest trial of cloud seeding. However, even the experts cannot be sure whether it's a coincidence or not.
Taitung City at 10 in the morning saw intermittent rain with the sky being thick with clouds.
Fortunately, the 8th River Management Bureau was looking to increase rainfall in mountainous areas through an artificial rain seeding test pilot program.
While the rain was quite clear to many, they did not know that it was created by this River Management Bureau. This year the 8th River Management Bureau in Taitung City hoped to prevent sand from flying around as they used silver iodide to seed the clouds to create artificial rain.
The combustion of silver iodide crystals in the air produces clouds at high altitude and increases the chances of rain though it also requires proper rainfall conditions of 40% chance of rain to be successful.
Today there were a few layers of clouds as the River Management Bureau burned silver iodide in the mountains at 9 in the morning, and at around 10, urban areas saw rain.
Still, this wasn't conclusive proof that the test worked, though a successful attempt last month indicates the rain had to do with their efforts as necessary weather conditions also helped.
Abnormal climate change over the past few years has led to these necessary actions though some say we can't replace nature as the environment is a very delicate balance.
